For Dillon, soccer was more than just a game; it was a vital outlet during his formative years. He spent countless hours honing his skills in his backyard, using a brick wall as his practice partner. His dedication paid off as he became part of a competitive traveling soccer team, participating in numerous state championships and even achieving third place in a national tournament at the age of 11.
Despite the challenges of growing up in a community where soccer was still developing—there was no junior high team during his time—Dillon’s passion for the sport never waned. By the time he reached high school, soccer had gained a foothold, and he was proud to be part of a program that has consistently thrived since its inception in the 1990s.
A Break and a Return
After high school, Dillon faced a crossroads. Although he had opportunities to play soccer at the collegiate level, he chose to focus on work instead. This decision led to a hiatus from the sport, during which he took a break from playing altogether. However, the spark was reignited when his children began playing soccer in the community.
Dillon started coaching his daughter Jodi and later his son Miles, leading them to tournaments and experiencing success along the way. This rekindled passion for soccer not only brought joy to his family but also reignited his commitment to the sport.
Establishing the Upper 90 Soccer Garage
As Dillon became more involved in coaching, he recognized a need for fundamental skill development among young players in the community. This realization led to the establishment of the Upper 90 Soccer Garage, a training facility designed for players of all ages. Located on 46th Street in Woodward, the Soccer Garage has become a hub for skill development, offering year-round training and practice opportunities.
Dillon takes pride in the progress his students make, noting that consistent training leads to significant improvements on the field. His philosophy is simple: soccer is a strategic game that requires mental acuity and skill mastery. He encourages players to view the ball as their best friend, emphasizing the importance of ball control and strategic play.
Coaching at Woodward High School
Dillon’s commitment to soccer has not gone unnoticed. His active involvement with the Northwestern Oklahoma Soccer Association (NOSA) led to an invitation to serve as a volunteer assistant coach at Woodward High School. Working alongside Head Coach Kris Godwin and Assistant Coach Cristian Perolli, Dillon helps guide a team of 50 to 60 high school boys. He appreciates the camaraderie and shared vision among the coaching staff, focusing on preparing young athletes for life both on and off the field.
Looking Ahead to Middle School Coaching
In January 2025, Dillon will take on the role of the Woodward Middle School Boys’ Soccer coach. He anticipates coaching around 35 to 40 eighth graders, with a focus on developing their skills in preparation for high school soccer. The team will have a structured schedule, including weekly games and a tournament, all aimed at fostering a love for the game and building a solid foundation for future success.
